Wine Maker: Pierre Morey

Fifty-eight year old Pierre Morey is one of the great white wine masters of the world. His Domaine originates (1971) from that of his father in 1930, now the Domaine boasts landholdings in Burgundy’s most noble vineyards which he has farmed bio-dynamically since 1997.
The Morey Blanc business is the marketing and micro-negoce arm, so named by the surnames of Pierre Morey and his wife Christiane Blanc. The style and quality of the wines are a synthesis of the nervous complexity and funk of classic old-school white Burgundy. They are complex and taut with underlying richness which have the capacity to age very gracefully indeed.
In 1989 Pierre Morey was appointed wine maker at Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet, a position he will hold until the end of 2008.
“For those who enjoy serious, classically styled, ultra pure white Burgundy that is expressly intended to age, these are wines that deserve your attention as each wine has its original, and individual, character.” Allen Meadows, Burghound

Pierre Morey Bourgogne blanc
“A pungent and not particularly refined nose of straw, apricot and melon leads to surprisingly tight, pure and vibrant flavors that possess good detail on the lemony finish. This is quite a good example of the appellation and is worth a look as it will offer a few years of development upside. 85-87.” Burghound
Pierre Morey Meursault ‘Les Tessons’
“This is also quite reduced on the nose yet the generous and concentrated medium-bodied flavors display excellent depth and mid-palate density as there is an ample amount of dry extract present. I particularly like the balanced and overall length here. Outstanding. (89-91)/2015+” Burghound
Pierre Morey Meursault 1er Cru ‘Perrieres’
“Tight, channelled and focused. Precisely edged palate with excellent focus and minerality. Drink from 2012. (19 points) 5-Stars” DECANTER Magazine
Pierre Morey Batard-Montrachet, Grand Cru
Morey Blanc Saint Aubin 1er Cru ‘Les Combes’
“A deft touch of wood sets off the elegant, pure, cool and airy aromas of primarily citrus blossom and wet stone where the latter element also appears on the detailed and slightly bigger flavors that lack the same punch and drive on the otherwise very citrusy finish. (86-89)/2013+” Burghound
Morey Blanc Meursault 1er Cru ‘Boucheres’
“Airy, pure, fresh and refined green fruit and sliced lemon aromas merge into detailed, minerally and naturally sweet medium weight flavors that possess good dry extract levels that confer a really lovely mouth feel onto the vibrant and lively finish that is quite dry and on the austere side that again, may be a bit too much for some. In sum, this is still relatively awkward and hard to read today. (88-91)/2015+” Burghound
Morey Blanc Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru
“(from all 3 communes). A reticent nose of subtle wood, intense green apple aromas infused with wet stone nuances is followed by pure, chiseled and intense full-bodied and muscular flavors that possess serious punch and plenty of verve on the powerful and impressively persistent finish. Very good quality for the appellation. 91-93/2018+” Bughound
